INTERNATIONAL SEMINAR ON BUDDHIST TRANSLATIONS: PROBLEMS AND PERSPECTIVES

Over fifty scholars and academics from a dozen countries participated in a seminar on the problems of translation of Buddhist scriptures held in New Delhi in February 1990. The first of its kind, the seminar was organized by Tibet House and funded by the Ford Foundation, with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations and the India International Centre lending active support. In his welcoming address, Lama Doboom Tulku, Director of Tibet House, defined the seminar as a forum for scholars working in a variety of languages to exchange ideas and coordinate approaches to translating Tibetan Buddhist texts into modern languages. Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan, Secretary, Department of Art, Government of India, delivered the inaugural address. Prof. D. Seyfort Rugg of Hamburg University presented the keynote paper

WORKSHOP ON ‘TRANSLITERATION OF SANSKRIT AND ENGLISH WORDS IN TIBETAN’

Resource persons, guests and participants at the workshop
A workshop on scientific methods of writing and pronouncing Sanskrit and English words in Tibetan was held by Tibet House at the Tibetan SOS Vocational Training Centre at Dehradun from April 11 to 17, 2003. The participants were from both monastic and non-monastic backgrounds. Two days each were devoted to the study of the Rules of Sandhi (euphonic combination), the Methods of Reading Mantra, and Transliteration of English into Tibetan characters. Emphasis was on the spelling of names of people and places in an effort towards standardisation. Special lectures from eminent scholars in the field of language and literature enhanced the studies. It was felt that the workshop was of great value to members of the younger generation working in the Tibetan language, as well as for those who need to know the basic rules of Sanskrit grammar.

TIBETAN LANGUAGE COURSE

Tibet House conducted a two month Elementary Tibetan Language Course in the year 2004 and another in 2005. This course was taken further to an intermediate level in the year 2006.
